Transformation Tuesday!! - Freddie - Before and After!!
This new weekly feature will hopefully highlight one of our beautiful dogs and the journey they have been on since their arrival at the Fetcher Dog Rescue Centre.
Dogs come to us in various states of neglect but none have shocked and saddened us like our newest arrival, Freddie.
Under that mountain of dirt and dreadlocks is an old spaniel.
Panic and fear overwhelmed Freddie when he first arrived with us and he tried to bolt at any chance he got; tripping over his own dreadlocks as he tried to flee.
Unfortunately, he desperately needed shaving so we couldn’t give him much of a chance to settle in before myself and Stephanie, armed with scissors, a bag of cheese and clippers got to work.
Despite how uncomfortable he must have been, he mostly stayed still and let us shave the majority of his body.
The dreadlocks around his bum were the worst, rock hard from years of poo and hair matting together, it was extremely difficult to tell his tail apart from the dreadlocks so we had to pull the dreads apart by hand to make sure we weren’t going to cut into his skin.
The same goes for the hair on his ears.
We spent about two and a half hours cutting his hair before calling it a night and arranging for our friend Sam from @tailblazersmobilegrooming to finish the job off in the morning.
Sam did a fantastic job and our boy looks like a completely different dog.
It was important for him to be groomed as soon as possible so that we could get him to the vets for a health check; the first he would have had in a number of years.
We found a few lumps under his hair that will be removed at the vets next week, they will then be sent off for analysis and we are hoping they are just ‘old boy lumps’.
He also needs his teeth cleaning as he has a big build up of plaque and we have to keep on eye on him for signs of a bug as he had a very high temperature.
Unfortunately for Freddie, I’m not allowed to bribe him with cheese anymore as he also needs to lose a little bit of weight.
Freddie has been through so much and even though he looks a lot better on the outside, we still have a long way to go to make him comfortable. We will keep you updated on his progress.
